Relief at the Pumps: Petrol Prices Set for a Drop in August, But Diesel Users Face Hikes

Johannesburg, South Africa - Good news is on the horizon for South African motorists filling up with petrol next month, with current data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) indicating a healthy decrease in petrol prices for August. This comes as a welcome reprieve, primarily driven by a more resilient Rand against the US Dollar and a softening in global oil prices compared to previous months.

According to the latest mid-month data from the CEF, petrol users can expect cuts of around 20 to 28 cents per litre. Specifically, Petrol 93 is projected to decrease by approximately 28 cents per litre, while Petrol 95 could see a drop of around 24 cents per litre.

This positive outlook for petrol drivers is largely attributed to:

Stable to stronger Rand: The local currency has held its own against the US Dollar, which helps reduce the cost of imported fuel.

Lower global oil prices: After some volatility, global oil prices have stabilised at lower rates, easing the pressure on the Basic Fuel Price.

However, it's not good news for everyone. Diesel users, particularly those reliant on it for transport and logistics, are unfortunately facing the prospect of significant price increases in August. Mid-month data suggests an under-recovery for diesel of around 62 to 66 cents per litre, meaning an increase is highly likely. This divergence in pricing between petrol and diesel is primarily due to tighter global supplies and refinery closures in the northern hemisphere, which are impacting diesel product prices more acutely than petrol. Illuminating paraffin is also projected to see an increase.

While these are mid-month projections and the final figures will only be announced by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy closer to the end of the month, the current trends provide a strong indication of what to expect. The official fuel price adjustments typically come into effect on the first Wednesday of every month.

For the average petrol motorist, a decrease of this magnitude could translate to savings of R10-R15 when filling a typical 50-litre tank. While this might not seem substantial, it's a positive shift that contributes to easing the financial burden on consumers amidst ongoing economic pressures.
