South Africa Braces for Increase in Petrol Prices as Global Oil Costs Surge
South African motorists are preparing for a significant rise in petrol prices, as global oil markets continue to experience volatility. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced that from the start of the next month, fuel prices will reflect the changes observed in the international crude oil prices.
According to the latest data, petrol prices are expected to increase by over R1 per litre, impacting both the 93 and 95 octane variants. The surge is attributed to a combination of rising demands as economies recover from the pandemic's cutbacks and ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting oil supply chains.
Experts have highlighted that the escalating fuel costs will also affect the transportation sectors, which could result in increased fares and potentially higher prices for goods and services across the country. The Automobile Association (AA) of South Africa urged consumers to brace for these impacts, emphasizing the importance of conserving fuel where possible and opting for more efficient travel plans.
The government is reportedly exploring measures to ensure that the ripple effects of these hikes are cushioned, particularly for lower-income households who might feel the burden the most. However, until a durable solution is implemented, South Africans will have to adjust to the immediate realities of higher fuel costs.
